“Post-Racial America”: Arizona Elementary School Will Whiten Faces of Kids on Mural June 4, 2010

From Wonkette:

An Arizona elementary school mural featuring the faces of kids who attend the school has been the subject of constant daytime drive-by racist screaming, from adults, as well as a radio talk-show campaign (by an actual city councilman, who has an AM talk-radio show) to remove the black student’s face from the mural, and now the school principal has ordered the faces of the Latino and Black students pictured on the school wall to be repainted as light-skinned children.

I am, quite frankly, speechless. Can you believe this? Instead of, you know, showing some testicular fortitude and telling all these crazy, batshit racist jackholes to go avail themselves of the fastest possible means of removing themselves from the general populace, the principal of this elementary school caves to the “request:”

[Principal] Lane said that he received only three complaints about the mural and that his request for a touch-up had nothing to do with political pressure. “We asked them to fix the shading on the children’s faces,” he said. “We were looking at it from an artistic view. Nothing at all to do with race.”

Bullshit. It has EVERYTHING to do with race—-and the fact that this lilly-livered nimrod doesn’t have the stones to stand up for those kids and let them know that on this there can be no debate: people who yell racist epithets at their likenesses are not good people. They are not people whose “opinions” deserve respect.

This city councilman, Steve Blair is a pestilence upon society for stirring up the hornet’s nest of Arizonan bigots:

In a broadcast last month, according to the Daily Courier in Prescott, Blair mistakenly complained that the most prominent child in the painting is African-American, saying: “To depict the biggest picture on the building as a Black person, I would have to ask the question: Why?”

Why not, Blair—-even if your argument was in any way true, what’s gotten your tidy whities in such a bunch? Is it that looking at the face of a black child reminds you that a black man is the President of the United States? Is it that the face of a black child constantly reminds you that you hate people who don’t look like you—-especially when they don’t conform to your preconceived notions? For all you morally bankrupt wastes of cellular material who have screamed “Nigger” and “Spic” at a mural of children, does it scare you to think that the racial myth of this nation is being dismantled and thus, you must have your racist fantasy of America back?

I guarantee you that as this becomes national news, this cockroach will beg off and claim that he didn’t intend for his hate-speech to damage the psyches of children. In the meantime, we have to constantly be on guard—-this is just the beginning as we march into a new long night. Ken Layne of Wonkette has some very sobering words in commentary about this:

Remember where you were, when you could still laugh about teabaggers and racists and Arizonans, because funny time is almost over. If the unemployment keeps up — one in five adult white males has no job and will never have a job again — and people keep walking away from their stucco heaps they can’t afford and the states and cities and counties and towns keep passing their aggressive racist laws to rile up the trash even more, shit’s going to very soon become very bad, and whether it’s the National Guard having wars in the Sunbelt Exurbs against armies of crazy old white people who are finally using their hundreds of millions of guns, or whole Latino neighborhoods burned to the ground the way the Klan used to burn down black neighborhoods a century ago, we are in for a long dark night and no light-colored paint is going to fix that.
