Constance McMillen wanted to bring her girlfriend to the prom. The Itawamba County school board said no. Not only did they say no, but rather than let Constance wear a tuxedo and bring her girlfriend to the prom, this fashion forward school board canceled the prom. Talk about cutting your nose to spite your face. Worse, the manner in which this board canceled the prom made it appear as though the cancellation was Constance’s fault. Yes, because the mere suggestion that there are people who would like to openly date other people of the same gender is enough to cause the cancellation of an entire prom. Yes, Itawamba County school board, it’s ALL Constance’s fault. Clearly, she should have kept her big lesbian mouth shut and been a theoretical homosexual.
A federal judge ruled that the school board’s actions violated Constance’s constitutional rights. So here’s where the “sort of” comes in: Constance’s attorney says that she’ll be able to attend a privately sponsored dance. But the official prom is still canceled, citing the “education” and “safety” of students. According to CBS, the school board claims that it is doing the right thing: “Itawamba officials said they felt not hosting the prom was the best decision ‘after taking into consideration the education, safety and well being of our students.’ Superintendent Teresa McNeece said it was ‘a no-win situation.'”
Indeed, Superintendent McNeece, bigotry and idiocy is a no-win situation.
